Purchases of gift certificates require that you open an account.
Once you have purchased a gift certificate, you are sent an email with the redemption code. You can then login to your account to redeem the gift certificate. Redeeming the gift certificate places it in your account available for use on either a future purchase of yours, or you may email the gift certificate to a friend. If you email the certificate to a friend, your certificate is moved to them, and they are sent an email (with your note attached) with their own redemption code.
