Sock Knitting - Part 2 - Heels

Sock Knitting - Part 2 - Heels

Teacher: Ute Kongsbak
Skill Level: Intermediate Knitting
Lesson: one 1.5 hour session. This class is taught as a private one-on-one lesson, or you can sign up your friends at the same time and create a private group class for a discounted price. Class limited to 5 students.

Are you ready to start knitting the heel of your first sock, but don't understand or can't picture what the instructions are telling you to do? Or have you taken Part 1 of our Sock Knitting series and are ready for Part 2?  This lesson is the second in a 3-part series that teaches you how to knit a cuff-down sock. This class picks up where the Cuff class left off, or after you have knitted a cuff and leg of the sock already on your own and just want help with the heel.

Toe construction is covered in Part 3, a separate class.

Part 2 - Heels
Skills covered include:
  • Review of elements of sock construction
  • Measuring leg length for desired fit
  • We will make a heel using a heel flap technique
  • Learn about 3 options for heel flap (EOP, S1K1, reinforced heel)
  • Learn wrap and turn for turning the heel
  • Gusset construction
  • Transitioning to foot of sock
At the end of this class, you will be all set to knit the foot of the sock until it is time to shape the toe which will be covered in Part III.  Spacing Parts II and III out by a week should give you enough time, but your time between classes can be longer or shorter depending on your needs.

Prerequisite techniques/materials:
  • Bring a your sock project (knitted cuff and desired leg length to beginning of heel-- usually between 3 and 7 inches)
  • Set of DPN needles that you knitted the sock on so far.
  • Darning needle.
