Sock Knitting Group Class

Intimidated by socks? If you're an intermediate-level knitter who's been eyeing sock patterns but aren't sure how to start, this is the class for you. Socks offer a satisfying way to branch out into new knitting territory while providing you with a beautiful and useful end product.

In this two-week class, you will learn a sock pattern that can serve as a basis for an endless variety of modifications.

Prework required: This class starts with the heel of the sock and expects you to come prepared with the cuff of one sock completed (approximately a 4-7” tube knit in the round on double-pointed needles). Instructions for this prework will be emailed upon registration.

Skills necessary:

• Knitting and purling as well as a basic cast-on
• Casting on stitches
• Knitting in the round on double-pointed needles (DPNs)

Skills taught:

• Knitting a heel and gusset
• Toe shaping
• Kitchener stitch

Materials needed:

• 350 yds fingering weight or super fine yarn
• US size 0 (2.0mm) to 2 (2.75mm) DPNs, or size needed to get gauge appropriate for your yarn
• The finished cuff/leg part of one sock (see instructions for prework).

Week 1: Heel — Monday, May 18
Skills covered include:

• Review of elements of sock construction
• Measuring leg length for desired fit
• Creating a heel using a heel flap technique
• The three options for heel flap (EOP, S1K1, reinforced heel)
  
• Gusset construction
• Transitioning to foot of sock

Week 2: Toe — Monday, June 1
Skills covered include:

• Measuring the foot and establishing the beginning of toe
• Shape the toe
• Two options for finishing toe (kitchener stitch vs. regular bind-off)
• Review of elements of sock construction

You will now have finished your first sock and are ready to tackle the matching second sock on your own.
