Tired of making only scarves and dishcloths?  If you know the basics of knitting and purling but are intimidated to advance to other projects, take your knitting to the next level with a sock knitting class. Socks offer a satisfying way to branch out into new knitting territory while providing you with a beautiful and useful end product.

This lesson is the first in a 3-part series that teaches you how to begin knitting a cuff down sock.  You will learn 2 different methods for casting on, select a pattern for the leg part of the sock and be on your way to knit on your own until you reach the point where the heel would start.

Heel construction is covered in Part 2, a separate class.
Toe construction is covered in Part 3, a separate class.

Part 1 - Cuff
Skills covered include:
  • Overview of the elements of sock construction
  • Casting on for a cuff down sock using 2 options of the long tail cast on (thumb method or sling shot)
  • Knitting in the round using 4 or 5 double pointed needles. We can also go over how to use Addi wonder circular sock needles.
  • Different options for cuff and leg design
  • Transition from cuff to the leg part of the sock.
At the end of this class, you will be all set to continue knitting the leg until it is long enough to start the heel. which will be covered in Part II.  Spacing Parts I and II out by a week should give you enough time, but your time between classes can be longer or shorter depending on your needs.
